Become a supporter
2016 is set to be a standout year for us and we are transitioning into an organisation that will empower and educate Africans worldwide. Maarifacircle is presently a self-funded organisation and therefore needs to maintain sustainability in order to continue delivering services. Many of our charitable aims and objectives could be achieved with the help of Government funding. However we feel a stronger message of solidarity, self determination and understanding is received by all if we are supported by the more than 150,000 people currently following our various social media platforms.
£1k: Yearly production of promotional material (flyers, business cards) & web based running costs.
£2k: The MaarifaHub - Launched on the 18th of July 2016, the MaarifaHub mobile app provides many great features including a comprehensive directory of UK based black owned businesses. The app serves as a single point of interaction for africans seeking to learn more about a range of subjects such as African history, the etymology of African names and resources for empowering children. This was developed by myself over a long 8 months of hard work, research and dedication, i hope you enjoy the app guys!.
Milestones yet to complete
£5k: Presently our app with thousands of users is not completely ours yet until we raise the funds to buy it outright. We still also require funds to maintain our mobile app and to and upgrade the functionality & features as more people download it.
£5k: Our own clothing brand goes into production. street team uniform and fashion line.
£80k: MaarifaHQ - A building/community base - Yearly rent and operational costs for premises in order to run workshops, signposting service, after school club & supplementary school. Runnings cost to fund salaries & volunteers.
The bigger picture down the line
1) As a community interest company, Maarifacircle is 50% profit making, therefore we will also set up businesses that compliment our charitable causes. Long term we will aim to do the following:
2) The development of projects in the UK & in West Africa (expansion expected) concerning education and enterprise.
The History of Maarifacircle
Maarifa Circle. Maarifa meaning knowledge in Swahili, initially started out as a serious of random thoughts posted online, related mostly to unjust events (such as police brutality) and the prevalence of unfavourable statistics regarding crime, education and our general social condition. During Maarifa Circle’s formative years, we recognised that our issues were not exclusive to Africans in the UK but instead a global problem for our people.
Maarifa Circle adopts an "each one, teach one" mentality and was originally set up as a Facebook page in April 2012, in order to share information on black history, and has over the years evolved into a source of empowerment and education. The organisation now exists to empower, educate and address the needs of all people of African descent.
Maarifa Circle established a website ( www.maarifacircle.com) in March 2015 in response to increasing engagement and interest through Maarifa Circle’s social media accounts. Maarifa Circle was incorporated in May 2015 as a community interest company (registration number: 9594628).
[A community interest company (CIC) is a new type of company introduced by the United Kingdom government in 2005 under the Companies (Audit, Investigations and Community Enterprise) Act 2004, designed for social enterprises that want to use their profits and assets for the public good.]
